Summer Symposium
August 8th, and 9th, 2026

We are very fortunate to have a number of great artists participating in Emma International Collaboration this summer.
We have made arrangements to have two of the world class turners stay after the event and are planning a two day Symposium to be held at Saskatchewan Polytechnic August 8th and 9th. Information about the venue can be found here.
Heather Marusiak
Raised in a world of fine craft as the daughter of a cabinetmaker and a weaver, Heather’s creative journey began early shaped by hand skills, curiosity, and a deep love for working in mixed media. With degrees in art education and experience teaching across the country and abroad, she brings both technical expertise and an inspiring, thoughtful approach to the studio. Heather’s work pushes beyond traditional woodturning by expressively blending familiar forms, textures, and colors into pieces that feel both ancient and entirely new. Her talent has earned her recognition throughout the field with multiple honors from the American Association of Woodturners.
Heather will demonstrate the full gamut of her artistic process: from the inspiration for her biomorphic forms to their concept, design, and execution. She will cover how to make components for a sculpture on the lathe and demonstrate various construction and joining techniques. She will show how she uses rotary carving to enhance a work’s form, and how woodburning and flamework may be used to enhance texture. She will discuss color theory and demonstrate how she uses airbrushing and drybrushing techniques in her work. Click Here for Heather's Demonstration Overview

Derek Weidman
Derek Weidman has been pushing the limits of the lathe and the woodturning field and has been a wood sculptor since 2003. His multi-axis work has been considered groundbreaking by many as his sculptures at every turn have been leaving observers shaking their heads at how it was made, and nearly incredulous after finding out the work was created almost exclusively on a lathe. In demonstrations, he asks for an animal from the audience to turn, and then with no planning turns that animal's likeness on the spot. He has in effect created an entire visual language that can capture any subject through the circular cuts woodturning provides.
