Our Turning Tutors!

One on One Youth Mentoring

Starting in October of each school year, members from Hub City Turners partake in tutoring Grade 10 students at Walter Murray Collegiate Institute in Saskatoon.

For the most part this introduction to turning is the first time these young people have worked on a wood lathe. This individual approach to mentoring allows a safe focussed teaching environment and allows detailed explanations of the types of tools we use and their proper usage.

At the end of each session the student leaves with a finished project, turned, sanded, and stained with their choice of finish.

In semester one, the students create Christmas trees in preparation for the holiday season.  In semester two, the students create candle holders complete with battery operated tea lights as Mother's Day comes in May!

Over the course of the year, our tutors have the pleasure of meeting up to 160 students and hope that our short interactions install the joy of turning with each young turner.  Once the students have completed this session, they are allowed to use the lathes to complete other projects they may be undertaking in their wood shop classes.

Our tutors have found this an incredibly rewarding experience as the students are eager and extremely polite.
