Full Day Demonstration Syllabus

August 8th, and 9th, 2026

Part #1: Addition and Subtraction: Constructing and Carving

Are you interested in pushing your turned creations into the sculptural realm, but not sure how to get started? Begin to think like a sculptor and harness both additive and subtractive sculpting techniques to further your creative pursuits. Heather will discuss design and planning, simple joinery, introductory rotary carving, and the tools and techniques to get you started. Be inspired to mix and match techniques to create sculptural work that is uniquely your own.

Part #2: Turn and Burn

Harness pin-pointed heat and flame to transform your work into something extraordinary. With a high-temperature pyrography pen, learn how to create dramatic markings and textures on turned and/or carved surfaces. Explore how burn-texturing may be used to enhance the form and flow of a woodturned object. Observe how flamework may be used to exploit the unique growth patterns in certain species of wood. Fire always makes things more exciting!

Part #3: Commanding Color: Color Theory to Enhance Form

Colour choice has the power to completely make or break the success of an otherwise well-crafted form, so it pays to be informed regarding color theory and comfortable with color application. During this demonstration, you will become familiar with the color wheel, learn the lingo (hue, temperature, value, tint, tone, mute, etc.), recognize various tried-and-true color schemes, and consider the psychology of color. Heather will demonstrate the mixing and application of acrylic paint on her turned, carved, and textured sculpture, but the color theory will hold true regardless of the painting or dyeing methods you prefer to explore. Take the guess work out of color and approach this element with confidence!
