Bottomless Bowl
Our first summer vacation was coming at me far faster than Irealized, and I needed a gift idea for the uncle and aunt we’ll be visiting. Unique people deserve a unique gift and Tomislav, YouTuber, posted his video of an interesting bottomless bowl, meant to rest on its side.
This is my version, that can sit upright on a very narrow foot, meant to rest on its side on the largest base bead and the wide rim. It’s locally grown Willow, 165mmx75mm, turned and sanded to 320 grit, sealed with shellac, polished with Yorkshire Grit regular
polishing paste, then Yorkshire Grit microfine, finished with carnauba and beeswax.
Hobo Fishing Reel
It was in an old library book I had borrowed that I saw my first hobo fishing reel. I decided I needed to make one for my dad and Father’s Day, with a few more moving parts and colorful accents than the one I saw in the library book.
The handle was an imperfect peppermill glue-up up from MelGenge. Where the cross did not quite align I disguised it fairly well inthe middle with the form. A ring of copper ring breaks up transition to the cedar spool, and Wenge is what was used to make the knob for reeling and the cap which contains threaded rod used to secure the reel to the handle.
It’s 350mm by 85mm. Everything was sanded to 320 grit, sealed with shellac, polished with Yorkshire Grit regular polishing paste, then Yorkshire Grit microfine, finished with carnauba and beeswax. My family helped me make the imitation lure attached to the end, which was some necklace beads, UV resin, dichroic film and sparkles, finished off with classic red yarn. I made the paracord wrist lanyard to secure it to the angler so the reel doesn’t take a swim in the water with too enthusiastic of a cast.
