What does it take to have a successful retreat?

  • 12 lathes
  • 4 grinders
  • 5 micro-carvers
  • 4 wood burners
  • 8 campers
  • 2 tents
  • 15 turners, 7 spouses, 4 club visitors,
  • 1 vendor and public interest...

We set up under leaden skies on Thursday, with the weather service promising a cool day and rainy evening. Lathes were assembled, tables laid out with a multitude of hand tools in preparation for a four day excursion into a world of creation.

Texturing seemed to be at the top of many turners' agendas as we had just completed a symposium four days before our retreat.

As promised, the rain came about 7:30 which caused us to drop the tarps around the rotunda and head for cover. It rained steadily for just under 14 hours as we rose on a cool damp Friday morning. Despite the dampness, production began in earnest as a few more turners arrived and joined the party.

Saturday brought sunshine, warm weather and many visitors who were welcomed to walk around the gazebo and watch us work and ask questions. The public response was quite favourable and it was fun to show off our successes.

The Traditional Cinnamon buns magically appeared mid morning and there were many happy turners with sticky fingers.

Cam Merkle from Maple and Bass set up a display tent and demonstrated his excellent tools and equipment.

Dave shows off his Sea Shell and acrylic resin Hallmark Rollerball with 3micron jewellry plating.

The 2026 Snerk!  Once again Al Jardine organized the creation of this mysterious and unique creature.

Trent shows that sometimes the best tool in the world is simply a hammer!

Sunday brought near perfect weather to end a weekend of creation, cooperation, mentoring and sometimes stepping out of our comfort zones. Our thanks to Paul Schroeder for organizing the event once again this year and to the wonderful people of Shell Lake that welcomed us to their village.
