The M. Rumley Company (a manufacturer of heavy farm equipment) in April 1912 started work on the construction of a new showroom/office/warehouse building on a railway spur line in the downtown area of Saskatoon. The 12-by-25-foot elevator and 9-inch thick floor permitted heavy equipment to be stored on the upper floors.
The wood for this project came from the elevator supports in
“The Rumley Building” in Saskatoon.
A few years ago my friend obtained some Maple beams from the elevator supports. He offered it to me if I would make a shot glass so he could drink maple whisky from Quebec in maple wood that could have come from Quebec as well.
The wood was soaked in oil and grease from years of use moving heavy equipment up and down inside the building. Underneath the grease and oil (some of the oil had soaked in a few inches) there was some beautifully figured wood from which I made 6 shot glasses and a box to hold the glasses
