30+ members came out tonight to share their work and learn the the intracacies of segmented turning with Vic Schapansky.
Dave Lennox and Mark Noete updated the club on the status of “The Wood Show” which is taking place March 13th and 14th at Prairieland. Paul Schroeder will be coordinating the Hub City Turners/Saskatchewan Woodworkers Guild exhibition area.
Robin Reynolds, our coordinator of the Student Education Tutoring Program here at Walter Murray Collegiate Institute proposed a solution to alleviate our members consistently using their own tools and accessories when teaching the 140+ students each year. A motion was made to purchase enough accessories to outfit each lathe with safe centres and chucks. We also need some specialized tools to facilitate finishing each project in the limited time we have each week. These tools will remain the property of the club to be used both in the school and at functions such as our Shell Lake Retreat. A motion was put forward, seconded, and there was some discussion. A slight amendment was made and the motion passed without dissension.
Feature Demonstration
This evening Vic Schapansky demonstrated his process in creating segmented turnings. He brought in a number of jigs and a visual presentation and with samples explained the exacting process of creating a number of segmented products.
There was a fairly involved discussion on what can go awry when preparing and glueing segments.
There was a great deal of focus on his specialty created table saw insert to alleviate damage to small segments after passing his jig past the table saw blade.
Questions were asked and answered and participation in the presentation was spirited.
