Thanks to Jay Scott for sending in a description and pictures of this lovely lidded box.
Domestic Wood Trio – Lidded Hollow Form
“I’ll just make a quick medium-sized bowl out of this cherry.” Three months later this is the result of an unremarkable cherry blank, a deep focus on my airbrush and dyeing skills. I’ve wanted to do a lidded vessel for some time and I had the time to play, learn and experiment.
The vessel is 170mm wide and 230mm tall (7″x9″), made of cherry with a curly maple lid, topped with an oak finial. The vessel interior would not darken as much as I wanted with dye so it received black galaxy paint, as did the finial. For the sake of consistency, all other pieces were dyed with Keda dyes, everything sanded to 400 grit, and all sealed with 10-15 coats of shellac. That was followed with regular and microfine Yorkshire Grit abrasive pastes. Finally, everything was buffed on a cloth wheel loaded with beeswax.
I haven’t decided what I think of it. There are aspects I really liked, others I know could be improved, but I learned a lot in multiple areas of the project. If only for that reason, it was a worthwhile experiment.
