Richard Pratchler and Jay Scott have been busy in their shops. Here are some pictures of their recent work.

Richard has been exploring some new design options with some smaller bases and different proportions. Here are some shots from one of his lidded vessels made from resin and end grain slices.

Mother’s Day Gifts

Homer Simpson’s Invention for My Wife

In a classic episode of The Simpsons, Homer was experiencing financial woes and fell asleep early while trying to come up with a money making invention. Just as he catches a glimpse of his dreamed, and very lucrative, device Marge wakes him up. I made his invention for my wife for Mother’s Day.

Maple, Poplar, bamboo and steel comprise this little miracle wonder. As the advertisement on the episode stated, “Every home in Canada has one, and in many cases two or three.” If you’d like to place a pre-order for the next production run please contact me for instructions to make your $5000 deposit. So far, no one has ordered yet. If only they knew what it could do…

My mother received from us a visit and a 75mmx75mm walnut combination votive, tea light and dinner candle holder for Mother’s Day. We were glad to visit and deliver it in person.

Father’s Day Mallet

No, not for getting his attention after supper following a well earned “news and snooze”. It is a gift reminiscent of countless hours of reeling up Yellow Perch twenty times the number of hours, spent, sitting on the Lac Pelltier ice.

Sixteen inches long by two inches wide and made of hard maple, I turned the mallet, sanding it to 240 grit. It was then dyed with Keda pigments dissolved in water. As the dye was worked to resemble the fish, it was progressively sanded to 600 grit before being finished with polyurethane. The final polish with Yorkshire Grit regular and microfine, followed by carnauba and beeswax was the final part for the mallet. The hangar is two pieces of our old oak flooring, turned, finished with shellac then buffed on a cloth wheel system.

Like a previous lightsaber I’ve made, the hanger will also act as a table top display. My Father’s Day gift was a tarp and air cleaner so our home and lungs are exposed to fewer particulates. Thank you to those club members who helped me choose the right system for me.
