July 5, 2022

This project was a Father’s Day and birthday present for my father-in-law. He happens to be a Toronto Blue Jays fan, so I built around that theme. I looked at retro logos and possible inlays, finally deciding on a resin ring of the darker Jays colour and a red paracord inlay to represent red thread and laces. The lighter blue of the top of the rim was not was what I was aiming for. It was meant to be much more saturated.

The resin was challenging. We didn’t get it perfectly level on the first pour, and it took three subsequent pours to get to a point that I could turn it. Even then, the tolerance was razor-thin and the minor movement of the wood, as this project was completed over a few months, was almost too much to deal with. But, I pulled another rabbit out of my hat, except for the tiny mistake you cannot see, and the way the light blue wood didn’t dye. This was because it was permeated by the resin pours and it wouldn’t have worked to dye it first, so it is what it is.

The final size was approximately 45mm x 215mm. It is made of maple, epoxy resin and paracord. The piece was finished with shellac, then polished and buffed with tripoli, white diamonds and beeswax.
