Jay Scott won big at the last meeting door prize and has submitted some pictures of the final result.
At the April 2024 meeting, I was fortunate enough to be drawn a few times for our monthly raffle and received two sets of matching pieces of Mayday. They seemed to have been cut within days of my receiving them, so I decided to try another round of turning green wood. From what I’ve learned I might have new viable wood options. Prior to these recent green turnings I thought moisture caused more of a rust concern. Rusty lathe out of my mind, with a few precautions, I just need to get over the fact that I cannot finish the piece to my usual preferred high gloss.
The four bowls are 2″ tall and 5 – 6 1/4″, or 50mm x 125-160mm. The two live edges were quite stable, not yet fully dry, but not likely to move, much. The first two turned were fantastic, one warping in a pleasing and usable way, the second warped into a mean shape, more dramatic than I’d even hoped. All were sanded to 240 grit and finished with mineral oil and beeswax buffed in.
